Recentering Through Change
In part 1 of this series, I invited you to notice how you meet change.
For many people, that alone can be eye-opening. You notice the grip, the urge to manage, fix, prove, or withdraw. You pause before reacting.
And still, you may feel stuck inside the pattern.
Awareness on its own does not always create change. It creates a gap — an opportunity. What you practice inside that opportunity is what begins to shift everything.
This is where a simple earth-aligned teaching can help.
The tradition I teach offers many ways to understand the parts of us that can restore balance. Today, I want to begin with two of them:
Human Spirit — your inner Fire
and
Human Body — your inner Earth
Spirit & Fire
The energy of Fire and Spirit is like a spark held back by nothing — unbounded freedom.
This is the part of you that extends beyond the boundaries of the body. It is untamed, alive with imagination, and able to play in its fullest expression as if no one is looking. It allows infinite possibilities to exist — the place where true innovation becomes possible.
As children, this part often comes naturally. We pretend, wonder, and follow possibility wherever it leads. Yet over time, our wildness gets trained into practicality — and slowly, the field narrows.
When change lands unexpectedly, this matters. When we get attached to one version of how life should unfold, the field of possibility narrows. We may move quickly to control, contain, or prevent what has not even fully unfolded yet.
Spirit and Fire ask us to allow — to make room for the part of us that can play with all possibility before fear or perceived constraints close the door.
Body & Earth
The energy of Body and Earth is the ground beneath the spark — the place where possibility manifests and becomes sustainable.
This is the part of us that consistently asks, “What is needed?” It helps us nourish ourselves, move through life’s rhythms and challenges, and stay connected to what truly matters.
It is the mama bear that grounds us in our center — the part that knows we are not defined by productivity or achievement, but by the simple truth that we are each unique and precious children of the earth. It reminds us that our bodies must be tended if we are to stay centered while life moves.
When this energy is active in us, we are less likely to overextend, collapse, or abandon ourselves. We can slow down enough to hear what the body is asking for: sleep, food, space, movement, support, a boundary, a pause.
It is with this energy that life can flourish in this world.
When Fire and Earth work together, something begins to shift.
Last week, we identified the Shock → Act → Burnout → Repeat pattern that tends to come from our reactive responses to change. As you begin working with these Human Elements, you can start practicing a different pattern:
Pause → Rebalance → Act
Not perfectly. Not instantly. Yet even after working with only two of the four Human Elements, you are already moving more sustainably.
This week, I invite you to connect with Fire and Earth using your five senses.
Sit with Fire — a candle flame, sunlight, a warm cup, or light moving across a room. Notice how it moves, warms, flickers, expands, and resists being held. Then sense where that same quality lives in you.
Ask the Fire:
What possibility exists here that I haven’t allowed myself to consider?
Where have I mistaken unfamiliar for unsafe?
Then bring in Earth — ground beneath your feet, a tree, soil, stone, or the weight of your body being held. Notice how Earth holds, steadies, receives, and nourishes what is ready to grow. Then sense where that same quality lives in you.
Ask the Earth:
What do I truly have capacity for right now?
What is needed to nourish and support me?
Let the natural wisdom of Fire and Earth help you strengthen your relationship with Spirit and Body.
In the next post, we’ll add two more human elements — Emotions and Heart-Mind — and begin to see how all four work together as a living map of balance.
For now, practice beginning with these two elements.
With warmth and resonance, Annie
